With the Something in the Water Festival far out of our minds until next year, it is having lasting effects here in the Tidewater area. As we have mentioned, it was the foundation behind updating the urban garden at Seatack elementary. We overhauled the entire garden thanks to donors such as Pharrell Williams, Timberland, Virginia Natural Gas, WPL, Vulcan Materials, Kempsville Building Materials, Treated Lumber Outlet, Atlantic Fence Supply, Tidewater Rebar, Valor Fencing, and our team here at Visionscapes.
The children at the Achievable Dream Academy along with the help of Billy Almond of WPL, designed the master garden. The new garden tripled space and included edible tree species, pollinator shrubs, an arbor gateway, an outdoor classroom, new greenhouse, a gathering circle, and compost bins. The garden will serve as an important educational space for the school and community. Harvested fruits and vegetables will be used within the school’s cafeteria to teach the students a valuable lesson on healthy foods and where food comes from.
The garden has done more than just feed the students and families. It has brought together the students, families, teachers, and community to make the garden successful. Our community has come together to weed and water the garden on Wednesday evenings throughout the summer.
This provides a learning environment for everyone to learn about sustainable living, the parts of plants, life cycles, composting, eating habits, and so much more. Pharrell Williams has become a real-life superhero to these kids and has made a lasting impact on their lives. But so can you, stop by Seatack Elementary school any given Wednesday evening from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm to help take care of the garden and to change lives in our community. We are happy to share with you, photos of recent harvests from the garden and some of our favorite photos from the whole project!
